What time and from where in OP? My wife and I were thinking of heading out around 4:00 from my work which is on College Blvd between Lackman and Renner. I'm willing to either meet you or delay my departure if you want to make it 3 BMW's caravaning down. One caveat, I'm not a speed demon. I'm setting the cruise at 5-7 over and leaving it there. Speed is reserved for the track w/o cops. :)

Would be leaving from Hwy 69/103rd area - not quite sure on timing yet, but definitely planning to leave by 4 I think. Will post up when I've got a better idea - looks like my wife is going along as well, see what time she can get away from the office.

Student, workers, attendees, wannabe's....everyone. It is going to be hot, please hydrate starting on Thursday...8 glasses of water is recommended depending on your body size etc. You need to do this before, during and after the event. Bring extra socks and t-shirts or whatever. Cotton is the best fabric. Bring a chair and cooler with ice from the hotel (get it early before everyone else). A cap/hat is a good thing. I found that baby wipes (like the soldiers used in Iraq) helps refresh as well. The UV rating is going to be high so use 50 sunscreen minimum or you will get sunburned. Did I say drink plenty of water...plenty of water.

Here is some tips on hydration you should pay attention to:

When it’s hot – and even when it’s not – remember that you need to drink water even if you only plan to lounge by the pool. Since the human body is 60% water by weight, this logic should be as clear as a glass of the cold elixir itself.
How the Body Uses Water

As the body’s dominant chemical, H20 plays a part in every bodily system. Water washes through organs to bring nutrients to cells and moisture to tissues. It flushes out wastes and toxins. When the body runs low on water, a condition known as dehydration sets in to sap energy and make you tired. Dehydration can cause headaches, muscle weakness and lightheadedness. Many of the aches and pains that we feel are often symptoms of dehydration. A few glasses of water could make us feel better in no time.

We lose water when we breathe, sweat, urinate or have bowel movements. Additional water is lost with exercise or strenuous activity, and, when we're sick, in vomiting and diarrhea. If fluids that we take in do not replace water that is expelled, then we feel bad. How bad we feel and whether or not dehydration becomes life-threatening depends upon how out of balance the outtake and input of fluid becomes.
Replacement Theory

Most of us have heard that 8 glasses of water a day is recommended to ensure balance, but 8 glasses may be too much for some and not enough for others. The 8-glasses rule was calculated based upon a replacement theory.

The theory assumes that the average adult’s urine output is 1.5 liters a day and that he or she loses another liter of water breathing, sweating and defecating. Since the water in food generally includes 20 percent (one-fifth) of total fluid intake, an adult must drink 2 liters of water or a little more than 8 cups a day. The 8 glasses a day model doesn’t take into account individual health, activity level or environmental conditions.

A better way to tell whether you are drinking enough water is to pay attention to what your body is telling you. First and foremost, you should drink enough so that you never feel thirsty.

Thirst is like the emergency warning light that goes off to tell you that something is wrong. If you wait until you are thirsty, it is too late and you are probably already heading to the couch to lie down because you have a headache, are tired, and feel lightheaded. Second, you should be urinating one to two liters of colorless or slightly yellow urine a day.
Hydration During Exercise

The Centers for Disease Control suggest that you get active, and that during your physical activity, whether it is walking, hiking, softball or any other sport, you drink plenty of water to replace the additional lost fluids. Their recommendation is at least eight to ten 8-ounce cups per day.

The more you exercise, the more you need to keep the water coming. The Mayo Clinic says that an extra 1 or 2 cups of water a day should suffice if you walk or bike for an hour. If you are paddling in your kayak for 3 hours or training for a marathon, though, you will probably need more, which varies depending upon how much you sweat. 2 or 3 cups may be fine unless it is exceptionally warm. Long sessions of intense exercise call for the addition of a sports drink that replaces sodium lost in sweat.

Fluid can also be replaced at a rate of 16 ounces per pound of weight lost during exercise. Weigh yourself immediately before and after strenuous exercise to see how much weight you lost. It is important to note that some diseases impair body fluid loss, so you may need to correct you calculation of replacement fluid intake.
Water Replacements

Water is the best bet for replacing the water you use, but many fruits and vegetables are high in water content. Even milk, juice, and beer contribute to your fluid intake total, but alcohol and caffeinated products cause water loss and should not be a major portion of your intake.

Make it a routine to drink a glass of water with each meal and between meals. Drink more before, during and after exercise. The Centers for Disease Control suggest that you drink a glass of water before you get moving, and drink another half cup every 15 minutes that you remain active.

While drinking too much water may be a concern for endurance athletes, the Mayo Clinic Web site states that, “drinking too much water is rare in healthy adults who consume an average American diet.” If you have concerns about the correct intake of water, consult your doctor to determine what is best for you.

Have fun out there.

Hand sanitizer would also help.

Greg, thanks for the hydration post.

Justin, Baron is supplying a good quantity of bottled water, and HPDE Insurance Program is supplying sport drink an snacks. The drinks will be staged throughout the paddock. As the paddock at Hallett is spread out, it wouldn't hurt to bring a small cooler if you have one.

Also everyone, HALLETT HAS AN AIR CONDITIONED TOWER, where classroom and the restaurant are. The restaurant has a wall of windows that overlook T10 and the front straight. I'm guessing there will be a lot of "spectating" from there over the weekend!

Will there be tire services on site, or does anyone recommended a shop in Tulsa?

Definitely have the DE bug - now to get some pads better suited to the track

My first HPDE and loved it. I dont think I'll have as much fun doing auto-x anymore. I had a great time and finally had more mingling time with the other members in KC.

Note to myself: Next time I will NOT leave my phone in my pocket so it will not fall out and get lost :)

Likewise my first HPDE and it was a blast.

The stock brakes on my '08 M3 were pretty dang good (when Brock drove my car he was amazed at how good they were, it took him a couple of laps to adjust his braking points because he kept saying "I'm braking too soon"). That said I would at least need new stock pads before the next session. I want to say that the iDrive said I had about 25k miles left on the front pads and somewhere in the upper 30's for the rear pads (forgot to check before the event, side note: car has about 7k miles on the odo). Driving home I checked and it now says I have 7k miles left on front and 11k miles left on rear. Those brakes were flogged.
:whip:

My apologies to Ryan who drove the car around the track with my wife who forgot to put the traction control in competitive mode. :slap: And she didn't know that the throttle response could be adjusted by just hitting a button. Brock, OTOH, got to drive it in competitive mode with the throttle response toned down and had a blast showing me what the car could do. I know now what I need to aim for. :ryan:

Wil, I had fun chasing you around the track, that was a good challenge.

As my wife said after we swapped cars for a session: "Driving that car is cheating." :woot:

And yes, even Julie had a blast. Did I not say:
Quote:
My wife will also be there in her 2007 328xi Wagon (6MT).

So how come it came as a surprise to everyone that her wagon was a manual? :)

The worse thing about her car was that it was seriously under tired. Those stock all seasons had no grip on the track. Although combined with the xDrive they worked well in the grass. New tires are high on the list. But she also spent the drive back home talking about Chuck at Baron's wagon that he had put the motor from a 335 in. She's now curious on how much a motor swap like that would cost, she wants more power. :)

Mel,

Thanks so much for joining us! It was great seeing both you and Julie out on track.

Sometimes, we're shiny object people and it totally slipped past all of us that you had posted that on here.
We've made a note to add a new field to the registration asking if the car is auto or manual! So, a process improvement has been made! :)

Thanks again for coming to the event, it was a great time!

If Julie is talking about motor swaps after one event, I'd say you've (we've?) created a monster!!

First, excellent job done by everyone!! I can’t begin to count the positive comments I heard throughout the weekend. Even given the challenge of dealing with tropical temps, the entire weekend went flawlessly. It was great seeing many new faces. YOU are the clubs future! The long distance award goes to Jordan, a club member who now lives in Syracuse NY!! Following Jordan, was Jeff from Chicago, our great supporters from the Nebraska and Iowa BMW clubs, the Little Rock gang, and our new friends from Lone Star Chapter. World Challenge Pro Racer, and event sponsor James Clay planned on attending, but couldn’t due to a last minute schedule change. He text messaged Ryan several times over the weekend to see how the DE was going, and expressed his disappointment for not being with us! James has truly become one of the chapter’s best friends. Koni Challenge Pro racer Daniel Orr was able to join us for the weekend!

The KC BMW Club after-hours socials have become legendary! This year was no exception! From the great dinner and drink Sat night at Caz’s, Friday night dinner at El Maguey, hospitality suite Thurs, Fri, and Sat night at the hotel, to the hotel parking lot “adventures”, we make sure our group has as much fun off track, as they have on track! ;-)

First, let me apologize to anyone I miss, I’m a little exhausted from the weekend!

Thanks to:

Greg Lippert, our Registrar, is the glue that holds everything together. As all of us know who organize any events for the chapter, the tedious job of registration is never a worry under Greg’s control. Whether it’s registration, or anything else that needs to be done, Greg is always the first to step up.

Ned Smith, excellent job as Event Master. I couldn’t have anyone better to share those responsibilities with. You did a great job in the drivers meetings, covering all the info, and setting the tone for a safe and fun weekend, covering hot pits, to have “the talk” with participants who had strayed from the line, and surfing the paddock to thank our attendees. On a separate note, I am a little concerned about the look on Ned’s face after he took the Porsche racecar on track. I’m afraid the “dark side” is calling!! All teasing aside, we couldn’t put on our events without the support of our Porsche and Audi brothers and sisters. On of the first groups to jump on board to support us was the KC Porsche club!

Ryan Staub did a great job as DEC and Chief Instructor. As DEC, he got Ned and me to do all the heavy lifting as Event Masters!!…. just kidding! Your choice was obviously a great one! Ryan spearheaded two new cutting edge programs, “relaxed passing” in Instructor group, and the addition of a true advanced classroom program. I sat in on a few minutes of advanced classroom, co-taught by Ryan and Tim. It was great seeing advanced students “learning” in the classroom! “Relaxed passing” drew more than a little resistance from some of our learned leaders, including me. “Will they play nice,,,,AND SAFE??”, we asked? Ryan assured us, the chapters who have tried this, have had great results. Two of the key benefits are eliminating the “trains” that can occur with an Instructor run group with cars of mixed HP, with short straights like Hallett, and the drivers in the back in the trains, being stuck in a train at much less than their normal track speed resulting in their cars and heads cooling down, not always the safest thing on track. Everyone obeyed the Ryan’s rules, and had a much more pleasurable time on track. Ryan started recruiting Instructors early, and the result was great. Our Student to Instructor ratio was great. Thanks Ryan.

Tim Gerrity did his usual great job as Classroom Instructor. He used the new Ross Bentley training materials our chapter jointly purchased with Sunbelt chapter. I sat in on a couple classrooms. Great job Tim!

Thanks to all our Instructors for giving up their weekends to make our students more competent drivers. The skills we learn at DE’s make us better equipped to deal with the challenges of driving on the street with people who have less driving skill than us!! ;-)

Last year was the first year for us to partner with the Sunbelt chapter, who was trying to develop a DE program. We simply couldn’t ask for better partners. Anything asked of them, they jumped in! As we have experience running DE’s, they gladly yielded to us for that expertise. They got great hotel rates, with a hospitality room provided, and organized our Saturday night dinner at Caz’s. We try to run a reasonably priced event, and our meal wasn’t included in event fee. I can’t express how good it felt, after a full day of 100+ degree temps at the track, to see a packed room at dinner! It’s not difficult to get people to show up when you’re paying. To see everyone show up when it’s on “their dime” is very rewarding! Thanks everyone!!

Thanks to all the STUDENTS who attended. Everything we do is for you! We understand, in this economic climate, the cost of a DE is rather significant. We also understand there are cheaper alternatives of low/no education, loosely controlled, lapping days and evenings at tracks in our area. Our goal is not only to make you a better driver on track, but for you to leave our event as a safer driver on the street.

A special thanks goes to Mike Gamble from the KC Audi Club. Mike drove all the way to Hallett to help with our event! He kept grid going, and he and group 2 student Bill Blumhardt keep ice, water, and sport drink supplied to all the coolers placed throughout the paddock. They also ran “cone detail”! Thanks Mike and Bill.

Thanks to Kris Loveless from the KC Audi Club, who not only instructed all weekend (without driving), but also worked several hours to get a sick car back on track.

Thanks to Jim “meatball / debris flag” Lorenzetti for leaving is non streetable, track prepped NSX at Hallett, to trailer back a sick BMW to KC. His generosity goes without words. I hope he can find some enjoyment on the lonely trip back to OK to pick up his NSX. We all know how much he likes to eat at Cheddars and Rib Crib, but that just doesn’t seem like enough reward for his effort.

What can I possibly say about the Hallett staff? Great would be the first thing that comes to mind! As with all good organizations, GREAT comes from the top. Connie and Scott Stephens (Mother/Son), the track owners, are fantastic people to work with. They present at driver meetings to thank us for our business, and see if there was anything else they could do for us! Sami, the chief corner worker and facilities person, as well as several of their corner staff, told me we are their favorite group who runs there. I’m sure they say that to all their customers ;-), but what’s important, is that’s how we were treated!! Sami always goes the extra mile to take care of her customers.

Lastly, we couldn’t do DE’s without our Sponsors. Ron Butler, of Butler’s Collision, has sponsored our DE’s for years. Ron, and his staff, are the best!! This is the second year Bimmerworld has sponsored our DE. As you can imagine, with their type of business, James Clay is inundated with requests to sponsor events. We are so lucky he chose us. A special bond between him and our chapter formed the year he and his rig with the racecars, stopped in KC between World Challenge races. He has since been guest speaker at our Annual Dinner, and tried to attend the DE last year, and this year. Baron BMW remains a loyal club sponsor. Club to Baron liaison, Greg Gelatka, arranged for Baron to do car inspections, and provide bottled water for the DE. Thanks Greg and Baron. Ryan Staub’s HPDE Insurance Program / Lockton Affinity provided sport drink, and snacks for the weekend. The corner workers were grateful for the leftover snacks we left with them!!

I can’t wait for the next DE!!

Thanks guys for all your hard work making this happen again this year! :ahmmm: With exception for the heat, everyone down here had a great time and were very impressed with how the event was organized and run. The relaxed passing in the instructor group was a huge hit among all I talked to and it would be something we might explore for the advanced group next year. Hopefully this just the start of a long lasting tradition between our two (and maybe more) chapters! We are already looking forward to "no excuses 3"! :D

Wow, great event! Well worth the 3,642 gallons of sweat. (per day :)

Thank you to all the event organizers for the hard work (and accommodating my iffy schedule this year). My season is not complete unless I run at least one of the KC BMW club events- it's such a great crew. Very well run, well organized event.

Many thanks to Mike E. and Mel for trusting me with their rides! Kudos to Drew for a phenomenal job this weekend.

Looking forward to the next one!
